Oil on copper, 2005

Daily Deviation

Given 2006-08-26

In the artist's own words: "These paintings represent a joint exploration of collage, surrealistic devices, and the use of art historical techniques and methods. Postmodern allegory, the mechanics of collage verses pastiche. While being based upon the rules and laws of reality, the work experiments with what is identity. I'm afraid I really don't understand the title, though? Could you please explain? It's obvious that there should be a lot of meaning behind it, but for the life of me I don't know what it is?

Hi Bernard!
I paint on copper...for a few reasons. I wanted a more archival surface (this is disputable....however...it does corrode under the paint layer) woven substrates expand and contract w humidity which causes cracking. According to Copper as Canvas, a book put out by the Rijksmuseum, 500 years of paintings on copper look as good as the day they were painted. The printing plate copper, which is 18gauge is heavy, can only be easily used in sizes under 12 x 18, and they must be framed to exhibit (nothing to hang from). I love metal, my favorite color is copper, I like it's heaviness, I enjoy preparing it by scourering the surface and putting lead white ground on it....I don't like repairing the occasional gouge from something else metal hitting or scratching it. I would be happy to send you more info! Ps love you work! Imagination trumps observation!!
